STEPS TOWARDS A CIRCULAR FASHION MODEL - What is the circular economy/circular fashion?

About the Circular Fashion Pledge Check Out

Want to find out some actionable steps as a fashion brand, you can take towards a cleaner, more sustainable model? “The circular economy refers to an industrial economy that is restorative by intention; aims to rely on renewable energy; minimize, tracks and eliminates the use of toxic chemicals; and eradicates waste through careful design.”

Basically a circular economy means - building our products to last! Recycling and refurbishing the products we can no longer use and making them new again! And circular fashion is the same concept… Choosing the right materials, that will LAST and can circulate as long as possible in a valuable way. ‘Circular fashion’ can be defined as clothes, shoes or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced and provided with the intention to be used and circulate responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible in their most valuable form, and hereafter return safely to the biosphere when no longer of human use. (Anna Brismar, Green Strategy, 2017)

ENABLE TAKE-BACK OR RESALE By the end of 2020, launch at least one method or partnership to enable your customers to send-back or resell their used items. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Providing options to resale, upcycle, repair, donate, or recycle items gives them new life and keeps them out of landfills

INCREASE RECYCLED CONTENT SPECIFIC ACTION IN 2020 By the end of 2020, increase the total percentage of certified recycled content or scrap fabric by 10-percent in your top 5 selling items. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Producing garments using recycled content sends a demand signal that spurs growth in the recycling market

DESIGN FOR DURABILITY SPECIFIC ACTION IN 2020 By the end of 2020, increase the use of non-blended materials, and/or modularity and repairability in your top 5 selling items. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Designing items so they can be repaired, upcycled, or recycled ensures that those items and materials stay in circulation. Circularity can offer new profit opportunities through lower costs, increased security of supply of raw materials, tighter chain cooperation, and a more robust supply chain. In addition, the organization’s image is strengthened by showing that sustainability is being put into practice.
